This painting is part of a series called ‘Unfolding Future’, in which I was exploring the ideas of trust and guilt. I began with an I Ching hexagram ‘Work on what has been spoiled’ and decided to start with photographs of my children when they were little.
So this particular work has my daughter when she was about 12, as well as a photograph I took of Central St Martins art school in Kings Cross, near where I live now. Part of the guilt I was exploring was about leaving my children when they were little and I went to art school, I went to college at Byam Shaw School of Art in London many moons ago. I had 2 young children when I began and had my third child, taking a year out half way through the course.
I also felt guilty about not giving my artist-self the support and encouragement I needed to be a serious artist. The trust I developed and expressed in my work kept me going.
This painting came together really quickly and I wanted to keep the freshness of it which reflected the innocence, I didn’t want to over-paint it.
